The Body Remembers — What Physical Anxiety Feels Like

If you’ve ever said, “I’m just tired,” but deep down knew it was more than that… this one’s for you.
Anxiety doesn’t always scream. Sometimes it whispers through your body—tight shoulders, a racing heart, a heavy fog in your mind, or a jolt of adrenaline when you least expect it.
This is physical anxiety.

🩺 Physical Anxiety
Physical anxiety happens when your nervous system is overwhelmed, or your body is out of balance—often from:
Hormonal shifts (hello perimenopause)
Chronic inflammation or adrenal fatigue
Poor sleep or blood sugar imbalances
Nutritional deficiencies
Lingering emotional wounds the body still carries
That last one might surprise you—but the body often holds what the mind avoids. When emotional pain doesn’t get processed, it can lodge itself into the nervous system. What we call “physical symptoms” may be the echo of an old story trying to surface.
My Story:
For years I experienced a sharp, stabbing pain in my right shoulder blade. It would flare up out of nowhere, sending me straight to the chiropractor for relief. Although those visits helped temporarily, the pain always came back. Eventually, I got curious.
What if this pain wasn’t just physical?
What if it carried an emotional weight I hadn’t yet acknowledged?
As I started exploring that possibility, I uncovered an old emotional wound (actually a few emotional wounds) that had been quietly lingering beneath the surface. Once I worked through it—gently and intentionally—the pain began to ease. It didn’t vanish overnight, but for the first time, the intensity did not return.
🌀 Physical Anxiety Is the Body’s Call for Safety
It’s not weakness. It’s not in your head. It’s your system trying to keep you safe—often long after the threat has passed.
The more we learn to listen to our body's cry for help, the more gently we can respond.
📖 What’s Next?
In the next blog, we’ll take a deeper look at physical anxiety—how it affects the body, how it can mask itself, and what science and research reveal about its connection to long-held emotional stress.
Stay tuned—you might discover that what feels “physical” is carrying a story your body is ready to release.
